WAYVA Coaches

It takes dedication and excitement for the sport to be a great coach.  We have a great coaching team here at WAYVA.  Some of us have been coaching here for many years with the club, while others are newer.  We have to figure out a way to prevent things like new babies, new jobs, relocation, or Master Degree studies from stealing coaches away!  All coaches within the North Country Region are required to complete IMPACT training through the league, as well as completing the annual online video training and certification for their team level.  Our coaches have attended coaching clinics presented through MVI, MSHSL, and area clubs, and some have CAP Level 1 certification through the USA Volleyball organization.  In addition, we all play volleyball on adult leagues both indoors and out.

13-1   Kristin Schmidt

Each of these coaches will be joined by our mentors returning from last season who want to continue to be involved with coaching but cannot commit to doing so full time this season. Here are the coaches you will be working with during the coming season:

Allison Lutz
Allison played school and JO club volleyball from 6th grade all through high school. She was a setter for the Wayzata varsity team in her senior year. She is back from college and coached for WAYVA last season. She plays on summer sand leagues when not coaching club ball.  She is not coaching full time this season but will be in the gym to assist as needed.

Alyssa Bouma
Alyssa played school and JO volleyball from 6th grade through high school. She played during college on intramural teams and played on several sand leagues over the last two summers. She has coached 12s/13s for WAYVA and is just filling in this season as needed while working on her Masters degree.

Angela Seitzer
Angela has played volleyball for 20+ years. Her volleyball experience includes playing 4 years at Jefferson High School where she was named captain her senior year and playing for Club Tonka JOs. Angela's coaching experience consists of a season with Club Tonka JOs, and coaching for WAYVA for 6 years. Angela enjoys playing recreational sand volleyball on spring, summer, and fall leagues.

Cate Dahlberg
Cate has been playing volleyball since she was 12 years old. She played at Maple Grove Senior High as a setter, where she was named Captain and was the All-Conference selection for the team. She went on to play for the Norse at Luther College. Cate has coached teams for Minneapolis Washburn, Maple Grove, as well as working with youth and adult players for Minnesota Volleyball Headquarters. This will be Cate's 7th season working as a setting coach for Wayzata. Cate currently works as a Special Education teacher in the Osseo school district.

Cindy and Steve Bouma
This will be Cindy & Steve's 16th year as coaches for Wayzata JO's. Longtime players themselves, they became coaches when their daughter (now out of college) started playing for Wayzata JOs. They both are USA Volleyball CAP Level I and IMPACT certified coaches. They have coached 12s, 13s and 14s teams for Wayzata. They are passionate about teaching young ladies about this sport and love working with the 12s age group. They also find time to play volleyball in recreational leagues throughout the year.

Dan Tierney

Dan was new to WAYVA last season but not to the sport of VB. He has played in school, club, and adult leagues, indoors and out, in swimming pools and in snow! He has also coached softball and baseball for his children over the past six years. His focus is to make fundamentals fun and support individual player growth in all roles of the game. He had a great season last year and we are hoping to have him back again this season!

John Wood
John started coaching for the club when his daughter (now graduated from college, married and working as an ICU RN in Philly) began playing for Wayzata JOs as a 6th grader. John returns for his 15th season with Wayzata JOs. He is also a USA Volleyball CAP Level I and IMPACT certified coach. John has coached 12s, 13s, 14s and 16s with Wayzata, but found his niche with the 13s/14s age group. John enjoys playing volleyball in recreational leagues and is the captain of the WAYVA adult sand volleyball team during the summer months.

Kristin Schmidt
This will be Kristin’s 7th year coaching with WAYVA. She has coached 14s/15s/16s. Kristin has been playing competitive volleyball for 25+ years and is passionate about the sport. She plays upper division ball (BB/A) year round, in different formats – doubles, triples, quads, and sixes. In 2012, she was fortunate to spend three months playing club ball in Helsinki, Finland. Kristin also officiates matches for adult leagues around the twin cities.

Morgan Baumgarten
Morgan played high school and JO volleyball in her hometown in Illinois starting at the age of 12.  After high school, she moved to Minnesota and played two years for Augsburg College.  This is Morgan's 3rd year of coaching for WAYVA and she is excited to pass along her passion for volleyball to the next generation!

Pat O'Brien
Pat coached the 10th grade team and assisted with the varsity team at Hopkins for three years. He also acted as club director and coached for the Hopkins Juniors for six years. He is a USA Volleyball CAP Level I and IMPACT certified coach. Pat has played competitive volleyball for about 30 years in men's and co-ed leagues and his passion for the sport has kept him playing and coaching, even when his knees keep telling him to stop. Pat will be filling in as needed with teams at WAYVA.

Taylor Montbriand

Taylor recently moved into Plymouth after completing her studies at U of M, Morris.  She played volleyball as an outside hitter and a libero during her time at Mahtomedi and East Ridge.  Upon returning to the area, she was the coach for the Plymouth Middle School and worked with 40 players on three teams.  This will be her 2nd year with us at WAYVA.
